Choosing the right carpet for your stairs can be tricky, as well as considering budget, style and colour you also need to consider practicality – the best choice for your stair carpet is a heavy-domestic rated, short-pile carpet in wool, wool blend or polypropylene, for both safety and to reduce the chance of the pile flattening through heavy use.

Loop pile carpets have a beautiful texture that looks great on stairs. The looping of the carpet fibre helps to prevent flattening.

If choosing a patterned carpet, consider who is going to be using the stairs, carpets with a small, busy patterns can be confusing to the eye, increasing the likelihood of a misstep. A safer pattern choice is a vertical stripe, which will give a sense of flow as you climb the stairs.

Aesthetics, sustainable slip resistance and ease of maintenance are key requirements of most school flooring’s.

Educational establishments are busy and challenging environments and the required performance of flooring can depend upon the function of the space, activity levels and the intensity of footfall – children spend approx. 635 hours per school year in the classroom. 

As the bathrooms are used by many children daily, there’s a risk of spills or wetness. Heavy duty safety flooring was chosen to reduce the risk of slips an falls. It’s slip resistance and durability make Polysafe Standard the perfect choice. By coving the flooring up the wall, this has provided a floor that looks good and is easy to clean.

Polysafe Astral Pur Calcite Blue, chosen by Ruffles Dog Day Care centre in Nottingham.

Ruffles had no outside space for the dogs to run and play, so an impervious, hygienic floor was required.

I fitted Polysafe Astral, the perfect choice for this project. In addition to the enhanced slip resistance, abrasion resistance and bacterial resistance –  it also contains recycled materials to help the environment. It can be easily cleaned with a solution of neutral cleanser (or alkaline cleanser, dependent upon the level of soiling) or even steam cleaned, so “little accidents” are not a problem.

As you can see below and most importantly, the dogs love it!
